Picket Fences
Picket fences are distinguished by their spaced vertical boards attached to horizontal rails. They are a decorative way to contain pets and children without blocking views. There are a wide variety of options when it comes to the top of the pickets from pointed, dog eared, arched/scalloped and more.
The most popular height in a picket fence is 4 ft with 1.75” spacing between pickets. Pickets come in two widths. A traditional picket fence has pickets that are 4” wide. There is also an option for 6” wide pickets which will give the fence a heavier look. As far as performance or longevity there really is no difference. It is all a matter of preference.
Privacy Fences
Wooden privacy fences offer complete privacy with little to no spacing between the boards. Design styles are scallop, arched or dog ear, frame style, lattice top and more. The most common height is 6′ tall.
Privacy fencing offers more design choices than picket fences. If you need a barrier for noise, sight or an athletic pet then a privacy fence is the right option.
